The Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda sits on one of the largest EPA Superfund sites in America — the original location of copper-smelting facilities built in 1884. When operations moved in 1902, the site was abandoned, leaving flue foundations, furnace slag, tailings, and toxic red sands scattered across the landscape. Today it's an award-winning golf course where black slag sand fills the bunkers and native grasses grow where waste once dominated.
